Ambleside

Ambleside is a large village situated in the centre of the Lake District National Park and is an ideal base for walking and touring the lakes. The pier for the steamers which operate daily on Lake Windermere are very close to the cottage and can be used for trips to Bowness on Windermere and to Lakeside, at the foot of the Lake.

Surrounding Ambleside is some of England's most striking scenery and places of historical interest. Kendal is approximately 12 miles away, famous for its mint cake. Hawkshead has connections with the poet Wordsworth and is only 20 minutes drive away. Grasmere has some of the most popular walks within the Lake District, it is also home to Wordsworth's Grave and to one of Wordsworth's houses, Dove Cottage. Situated just under 5 miles away, it takes just 10 minutes by car.

 

 

Beatrix Potter

Ambleside is well situated for visiting the homes of Beatrix Potter and the locations in The Lake District that were filmed in the making of 'Miss Potter.'

Loughrigg Tarn is one of the scenic film locations. It is situated on the fells near Skelwith Bridge.

Tarn Hows and the surrounding land was bought by Beatrix Potter in 1929 and is now owned by The National Trust. A 1.5 mile path circles the tarn and the nearby fells feature in 'Miss Potter.'

Yew Tree Farm is located in the Yewdale Valley. This picturesque farmhouse was once owned by Beatrix Potter and stars as her home, Hilltop, in 'Miss Potter.'

Keswick and Derwent Water. This was one of the main filming locations and was also the setting for a number of Beatrix Potter's books including Squirrel Nutkin, Benjamin Bunny and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle.

Bowness is the home of the Beatrix Potter exhibition.

The Armitt Collection in Ambleside is a museum, gallery and reference library exhibiting past Lakeland life and times. Some of Beatrix Potter's first editions are on show as well as some of her watercolours.

Fern Cottage is fairly centrally situated to all the attractions and film locations listed above, which are between approximately 1 and 15 miles away.

Directions to Fern Cottage

Fern Cottage is located close to Ambleside Pier, Waterhead Marine and the Youth Hostel (look for the triangle symbol) which can be seen towards the bottom of the map

Directions: On approaching Ambleside from Windermere, Fern Cottage is situated in a row of traditional cottages just past Waterhead Marine. Turn left immediately after the traffic lights for free parking in marked spaces in front of Ambleside Pier.

Other free parking:

*Continue in the direction of Ambleside on the A591 to find free parking in a lay-by on the right hand side of the road, before Hayes Garden Centre. (Approx 300 metres) It is extremely unusual for spaces not to be available here.

*Along Mciver Lane (see map)

Pay and Display Parking

There is a Pay and Display Car Park on the Lake Road (300 metres.) It is extremely unusual for our Guest's to park here, but there is always a possibility that you may need to during the peak season.

24 hours parking is £5.50, 2 hours parking is £2.20.

Car parking charges only apply between 9.30am and 6.00pm (ie this car park is free overnight and until 9.30am the following morning.)
